Greetings! From Winston-Salem

Round Table

We had some good old Carolina Barbeque at the Whitworths on Monday

Ruby their dog was the highlight.

Leader Lunch

Betsy Annese came through in a pinch with a dynamic Leader Lunch! She is one of the best storytellers I know and just so happens to have one of the best stories to tell!

Thanks Betsy!

Pumpkins

Painting Pumpkins

Joy Prom

Then volunteering and dancing the night away at Joy Prom!

That's what I call a Saturday.

Space Force

Tori (our beloved alum) was in town for the Regional Championships of Ultimate Frisbee. Her team Space Force had high hopes to make Nationals (and were seeded number one) but alas fell short.

In the games we watched, Space Force dominated. Wow such fun!

Her host family and mentor also came along to cheer!

What's Cooking?

Murder at the Fellows House?

Nope. Palmer is just learning how to make salsa

New Skills

Speaking of new skills. Fellows are all on the job. Owen (beloved Fellows alum) is showing Palmer the ropes. He is on step two.

The Fellows are also learning new modes of transportation

UPDATE Week of Sept 18

Round Table with Alums and Celebrating Palmer

Lots of fun had at Emi, Lucy and Molly's house on Monday. A great dinner. An even better dessert. Wonderful worship. And our first birthday celebration of the year...Palmer!

Board Social and Meeting

Tuesday's board meeting was festive. We do a Fellows/Board meet and greet prior to the meeting. It was such a fun time watching these great members of the community connect with our new arrivals.

Leader Lunch with Lanie

Lanie did not disappoint. She brought the heat and the props to support it. When I think of Kingdom leaders - this lady is near the top. What a gift to know her! And what a gift to share her with the Fellows. Thanks Lanie!

Professional Development with Ann, Frank and Tiffany

Speaking of great gifts. I often say we have an embarrassment of talent here in Winston-Salem. That was on full display Thursday and Friday as we spent two days with Ann Powers, Frank McNair and Tiffany Thompson.

This powerhouse trio did an amazing job with our Fellows.

The highlight was a song rite experience led by Tiffany Thompson. The entire exercise was fabulous - and the song we wrote was top 40 worthy.

Thank you Ann, Frank and Tiffany!

An added bonus was that we got to spend the time with our friends in the Greensboro Fellows. Led by JD and Maddison - this group was super cool to meet!

On the Job

Gracie showed off her new office space. It has a great view!

Stephanie and Palmer enjoyed petting the company dog.

On the Farm

We said good-bye to our friend Annie this week. She was a gift to Crossnore from President Clinton of all people. We love you Annie!

At the Church

First Presbyterian prayed for their Fellows at church this Sunday

Fellows flocked to Redeemer for a festivus

Oktoberfest

It was Oktoberfest in Winston-Salem. The Fellows made the rounds.

Celebrating Sydney and Caleb

We had some alum birthdays as well...

Sydney above and Caleb below.

UPDATE Week of September 11

These Fellows shine so bright

Labor Day Round Table

We invited Fellows Alums to join us for a special Labor Day Potluck Fellows Round Table

It was so fun to see 40 plus folks join us for a great night of laughter and story

The dogs were particularly happy

The festivities went well into the evening.

A tradition that is growing every year!

Leader Lunch

We had THE BEST time with John Bost in his cabin in Clemmons. John as usual brought his rare gift of storytelling. A particular highlight this year was his wife LaDonna. She dropped by then went on to steal the show! What a dynamic duo. Thank you John!

Salem tour

Ginny Tobiason, the Pastor at Home Moravian Church and one of the most well researched archivists of Salem history, gave us a great morning of sharing the stories behind the sights of Salem.

I need to record her and let everybody hear what she has to say.

We stand on the prayers of many many people. We were called here to continue the chain for generations to come...

Palmer's Bday

Palmer's Bday was Saturday! The Fellows had a fun time taking him out to the Latino Festival and then back to the house for a game night!

Latino Festival

The Latino Festival is such a fiesta!

It sticks to you

Lia is a major celebrity there! It was so fun for me to be the husband of such a famous person.

Bible Study

I dropped by church on Sunday to see Marley Cait leading a Bible Study with gals.

Rope Swing

The Fellows decided to construct a rope swing at Crossnore!

It's in process.

Julia Graduates!

Year one Fellow Julia Lovett Schaffner finally finished her MBA in Nonprofit Management. Now we just need to get these folks back here so she can take our job!

Raiders Win

Anna Rose led the team to a sudden death victory over rival West on Thursday.

Recruiting

Ned hit the airwaves to tell the Fellows story. Thanks WBFJ

UPDATE Week of September 4

And We're Off

The Fellows are off and running. Week one was big on community building and getting our feet underneath us.

Community

We had so much fun cheering on the Deacs at the first football game of the season. Thank you to those who gifted us your tickets!

First Days

This week was also week one of work. Always smart to start off with a hearty breakfast.

Dharma is enjoying her view from the 8th Floor of 500 West. Jacob is photobombing!

The kids reluctantly posed for their first day as well

Freedom Ride

The meatiest and most significant part of the week was going on a Freedom Ride.

Terrance Hawkins led the way in only the way he knows how.

It was so helpful to hear the story of this city from the mouth of the lion instead of the hunter.

Couldn't have asked for a better way to spend a Friday morning.

Pickleball

Noah taught pickleball all summer so he is our resident pro around the house

We have hit the courts multiple times throughout the week.

Including about 20 of us on Friday evening!

Spikeball

Spikeball has also been a fun way to enjoy the last few weeks of summer.

Ned is still learning the rules it appears

As is Haley...

Hanging Rock

Some Fellows Alums took several Fellows to one of our favorite spots on Saturday.

Two thumbs up from Marley Cate

Needs

We are still trying to land a few jobs for a few Fellows.

25-28 hours a week.

Opportunities for hard-working, servant-hearted, delightful-to-be-around people...

Let us know.

winstonsalemfellows@gmail.com

We said a few see you later for nows to Delaney Zizmer (heading to Orlando), Molly Dwyer (heading to the Queen City), and Callie Pierce (heading to Asheville). As hard as it is to say farewell, it excites me to think about the blessings we are sending and spreading through these amazing women.

DELANEY AND MOLLY

We threw a surprise bash for Delaney and Molly (Ned almost accidentally ruined the surprise) but by grace the evening was saved.

UPDATE Week of June 25% There!

Building a Sustainable Future Together

The Fellows Program was built for impact. Over the last seven years we have launched over 80 Fellows into the Marketplace where they are making a difference and multiplying what they learned during their Fellows Year.

And we are only getting better. One way we want to do this is in the way we are funded. Did you know that if 225 people donated an average of $25 a month, we would be fully sustainable? It's true! For only $25 a month, you could help ensure that the Fellows Program is built to last.

We are 25% to our goal. Please help us get the rest of the way!

DONATE TODAY

Thanks!

RE

We still have a few more slots to fill for next year's class. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the Fellows, please connect us today!

UPDATE Week of June 19

Sum Sum Summertime

Hef and I are taking short holidays before we get back to it. In the meantime, a few things did happen...

Owen and Michelle Got Married!

Another Fellows Love Story with a happy ending! What a way to kick off the summer with a killer celebration with this dynamic duo!

Lots of friends gathering to celebrate our friends! Congrats Owen and Michelle WOOD!

Field Days

Ned had the chance to participate in Field Days at Kimberly Park Elementary and Winston-Salem Prep as a part of a partnership with Beyond Sports and Piedmont Federal. Lots of fun!

Earlier this year I was meeting with Mia Parker, the volunteer coordinator at the school, who retired at the end of this school year. She told me that her last wish was to do a field day for the kids. I didn't forget! And on the last day of school, we pulled it off for her, and them! congrats Mia on a long career of service!

Bonfires

We gathered on Sunday to celebrate Sam Bishop who is off to Orlando for counseling school. We anticipate this will not be the last we see of this man. But it was a great moment to lift up a guy who has lifted up the rest of us.

Vacations

Ned and fam headed south to Mexico for an adventure. Hef is headed east to the beach this week to soak in the sun...hopefully!

Beezzzness

My mentor (in more ways than one) and I spent Father's Day harvesting honey!

We grabbed some extra honey comb from one of my hives and will use this while we spin the rest.

Recruiting

We have a few more sombreros to fill. While I was gone, we interviewed a great gal who we hope accepts. We are on the look out for three more. Please connect us! We also have another guy waiting in the wings, but will need to hold off until we balance out the genders.

Giving

Now is definitely time to give. Please check out our new giving platform that is slick, safe and easy!

UPDATE Week of June 6

Winston-Salem Fellows Sustainability Campaign

Friends!

Through volunteering, mentoring, advocating, teaching and financially supporting - you are part of the legacy that has brought us through seven classes of Fellows. Now, we are inviting you to take part in making sure our next seven years are even more successful by becoming a Sustaining Partner.

Our goal is to build a foundation of support that will ensure the Fellows Program continues for years to come.

Most of our funding comes through tuition and church sponsorships. However, every year we need an additional $75,000 of local support to run our program.

Sustaining Partners make an ongoing monthly or annual commitment that will help us broaden our base and strengthen our foundation for the future. We accept contributions of any amount, but recommend giving at a $25, $50, or $100 per month level. We understand that some can give more, and we will not refuse it! We also understand that some can give less, and we will not refuse that either! What we are seeking is to build a community of support we can rely on and that we can connect with continually.

Sustaining Partners will receive a custom Sustainer Coin!
(Designed by Fellow Alum, Bryn Lenkaitis)

Other perks include:
  • invitation to our Night of Blessing in the early Fall to meet our new Fellows
  • an invitation to our Night of Stories in the Spring to hear about our Mission Trip
  • our traditional photo card and Christmas card
  • a tax deduction
  • special correspondence and content just for our sustainers!
Would you please pray about what level of commitment is best for you?

We would love to have your help in reaching our goal of fully sustaining the Winston-Salem Fellows program for years to come! If you are interested, please click the link below.
Become a Sustaining Partner

Fellows continues on!

Fellows Alum Grace Mezzy came through town!

We are still recruiting for next year, so please contact us if you know of any young twenty-somethings looking for a life-changing experience.

They are also the former Board Chair for the Fellows, two graduates of Fellows Programs, and a current Board Member.

It was a true over the rooftop experience...literally!

It really was the sweetest of times this weekend with our final advance of the year.

We worshipped and loved on each other.

After we shared our mission statements, we ended with several secret Fellows traditions. Big sigh. What a great group of special people.

On Saturday evening, we had a parent ice cream social and slideshow. After the parents went to bed, we went out to celebrate.

UPDATE Week of May 15

Lot's of love to share at the Fellows house

ROUND TABLE

We had a fabulous Round Table with Chris and Virginia Perry. The Perry's are in a little bit of a nomadic season, so the meal ended up not being at their home but at river Birch Lodge!

Yum! The Fellows did not mind!

LEADER LUNCH

What an awesome Leader Lunch at INMAR. The Fellows were blown away by the thoughtfulness and wisdom of Fred, Andy, Lee, Thomas, Sharon and of course Christian McConnon (fellows alum). Cannot thank the team enough for such a great time in their cool new space.

CLASS

We couldn't get enough of Dana Nicholson! Jazmine is running to try to catch her as she was driving out. Full disclosure...it was because she forgot her glasses!

I'm happy to say Jazmine saved the day!

CELEBRATING A JOB WELL DONE

Denise Heidel surprised her Fellow, Thomas with a send off at their Chamber meeting last week. From one mascot to another - Denise couldn't have gotten a better gift for Thomas than a hand delivered gift basket from Thomas' favorite eating spot - Chik-Fil-A

In other news, Kate Spangler finished Vanderbilt Law School! She and Tim will be heading to Raleigh for work! Congratulations!!!

FUN TIMES

Fellows old and new are finding plenty of creative ways to enjoy spring time in Winston-Salem

MOMMA'S DAY

I want to pause a moment and celebrate my amazing co-director Hef Turner. Not only does she lead the Fellows well - she also is an incredible mom.

Happy Mother's Day, Hef!

I want to give a shout out to Lia, too. It is not easy being a working mom but she does it with style and grace.

Also, Happy Mother's Day to my mom!

We just had another interview this morning!

Keep up the prayers y'all. And specifically, send some females are way. We have four available spots for females next year.

UPDATE Week of May 8

This week, we were visiting our speaker at the 500 W. building and decided it would be a fun time to replicate our original Fellows picture! What do you think?

It has been such a great year with these sweet friends. How did it get to be May????

Round Table

We had such a great time at the Hilliard's back porch tree house Monday night. Beth shared about her experience being a Fellow.

We took rain precautions...

And we celebrated Emi around the fire as we ate her favorite dessert: banana boats!

Leader Lunch

Marshall White did an amazing job connecting with the Fellows on Wednesday. His story is such a great example of God's hand at work. Marshall gave a great perspective about being a person in their twenties, and also was vulnerable enough to share how he is still on the journey of figuring all this out.

So am the Fellows Directors!!!

Budd Group

What a fun time at the Budd Group working with their young professionals. They scraped the bottom of the barrel and asked me to spend Thursday morning with their team to talk about work, fulfillment, and purpose and perspective. It honestly was a blast. So inspired by these guys.

Lot 63

We kicked off another venture down in Old Salem on Wednesday. It's a long story but we have been given the opportunity to create a beautiful gathering space in the very heart of our city. I can't wait!

Bonfire

The Fellows took advantage of a beautiful weekend to spend it outdoors. Friday, Hef provided some Mexican favorites for Cinco De Mayo.

Saturday, the Fellows built a bonfire and watched the sunset over our beautiful campus.

Community Day

Thomas was the mascot of Clemmons Community Day. I have so many questions.

Bookends

David Barksdale and Ned bookended Saturday with a great race at the Mutt Strut. We both won our age divisions...sort of! Ha! Long story.

Then, we had the chance to support the United Way at the Sneaker Ball at WSSU. A great time.

Recruiting Update

We are steadily moving forward, pursuing folks to join us next year.

We are in process with one right now. And praying for more applicants. PLEASE join us in prayer.

It is graduation season and there are always folks who emerge now that college has officially ended. If you know some young people who are looking for a great next thing, send them to us.

Here is my cell phone (336) 413-4918.
Email me at ned@wsfellows.com

Giving News

Looking good Wyatt and Jazmine!

Speaking of looking good - the Fellows has a new Giving Platform!

It is safe, secure, and enables us to do things and track things like we couldn't before. We are very excited about it.

As part of this new platform, we are launching a campaign to find Sustaining Partners - men and women who will sign up to give a little each month to build a foundation of support for us.

Looking Forward

David finished with a solid win streak of Ws for the end of his Summit School Tennis career. It's going to be an emotional couple weeks for his dad as our Summit era comes to an end.

Monday: Staff Meeting, Let's Get Fit Day, the sum of Us, and Round Table at River Birch!
Tuesday: Prayer. Lewisville/Clemmons Chamber Event, Fellows Board Meeting
Wednesday: Leader Lunch at INMAR and last Bible Study
Thursday: SHARE and CITYWS meetings
Friday: Classes with the Nicholsons and Leadership Edge
Sunday: Mother's Day!

UPDATE Week of May 1

A Good Week to be a Fellow

It was a sweet week around here. After a really busy weekend, several Fellows took a breath and headed to the mountains for an overnight adventure and a big hike on Saturday.

Round Table
Didn't get a picture, so you will have to take my word for it. We had a fabulous Round Table with Elisabeth Anthony (Fellow Alum! Woo Hoo!) On her big front porch this week.

With the RJR Band in the background and getting to wave at strolling neighbors - it really did feel like we were a part of the fabric.

Which we are.

thanks Elisabeth!

Leader Lunch

Drew Gerstmyer, the architect, developer, and all-around amazing guy wow-ed the Fellows once again with some of the stories that have made him the man he is.

I am grateful we have men like him in this city. Half the places I frequent this guy played a part in making them happen.

thanks Drew

Bible Study

Shout out to Shannon and David and Rob and Cyndy for leading Bible Study this year. You are number one in my book!

Class with Nigel and Leadership Edge
Another photo fail, but golly gee, we had a swell time with Nigel on Friday. Leadership Edge wasn't so bad either! A good good day of learning was had by all.

Cabin Time
Most of the Fellows had planned a camping trip for this weekend. However, with thunderstorms in the forecast, they pivoted to a weekend at the Erickson Cabin.

They were welcomed by a critter or two as we had not been up there in a while. But a great time was had by all!

Stone Mountain
The sun came out on Saturday and the Fellows headed down the street to Stone Mountain State Park to hike the loop.

They made one wrong turn and were very grateful when they finally made it back to their car! Ha!

Recruiting

This week we had a long "interview" with a potential Fellow who got to hang out with us for most of the day on Wednesday and Friday! He certainly got a good taste test.

We hope to officially interview him this week.

We are in process with another potential Fellow.

WE NEED FEMALES!

Please help us recruit today!

UPDATE Week of April 24

The clouds parted just in time for Jacob and Emily's outdoor wedding!

Round Table On the Farm

We were hosted so well by the Zimmerman clan on Monday night! What a gift to be outside and to gather around a table while the chickens meander about and the kiddos jump up on your latp.

Meg's host family. so so sweet! thank you Kip and Erika!

It was also a chance to celebrate our sweet Jazmine. It was her birthday on Tuesday!

Leader Lunch with Corlis Sellers

Wednesday we had Leader Lunch with Corlis Sellers. Her story of resilience, servanthood, and courage to be a change agent inspired us.

Thank you Corlis!

Class with Nigel

Nigel did his thing.

That's about all that needs to be said.

Grateful.

Earth Day!

The Earth Day Fair ended up getting moved inside.

Still - it was a lot of fun, a lot of energy, and a lot of people! Including two of my favorites from Peachtree Street! Happy Birthday Nino!

Ribbon Cutting!

The other big project we have been working on is the Emma and Stuart Thomas Trail on the Crossnore Campus.

the Fellows were part of the set up crew

And the trail making crew

And now we are partakers!

What a cool project to be a part of!

Jacob and Emily!

Jacob and Emily (once Sandstedt) now Starr were married on Saturday. What an event! Two amazing families. A Fellows homecoming. A beautiful venue. And the clouds parting just in time!

It could not have gone better.

Jacob and Emily are a beautiful couple inside and out. We are thrilled for them. We are also thrilled to welcome Jacob officially into the Fellows family.

And we are also hoping that these two will get their wish and have the chance to move back to this neck of the woods once they finish grad school.

Congratulations Jacob and Emily!

UPDATE Week of April 17

What an awesome evening at the Ramkat for the Forum on Faith and Culture. A true highlight of the year!

Round Table

We had a Mexican Fiesta at the Bailey's home last Monday. We laughed and discussed all manner of topics. We listened to the train go by. We worshipped. We talked about seeing God on the way to work like Jesus did. And we celebrated Callie!

Celebrating Callie

She was totally surprised...to the point she started singing Happy Birthday as if it was for someone else!

What a treasure you are Callie Pierce!

Leader Lunch Melissa Parker

Speaking of treasures. We had lunch with Melissa Parker this week. Usually, we are meeting with her in her fancy office, but this year we had a dressed down version of this remarkable human being.

It may have been our best time with her yet. And that is saying something!

Hef and Molly continue to match!

Fridays with Frank

We wrapped up class on Friday with Frank McNair. We discussed having difficult conversations and working through conflict.

Forum On Faith and Culture

As a storyteller, I can honestly say that Friday night was a most affirming experience. I believe stories can change the world. And after hearing from these masters I am more convinced. WHAT A NIGHT!

Community

Worlds collided and we had a great day on the Crossnore property with Fellows and Piedmont Federal getting these trails ready for the grand opening next week!

Community often happens best when we get out there in sweat.

It also happens with yummy beverages

As well as outdoor movie nights!
