Ecuador Day 5: A day in the life with Reypin and meeting El Refugio (Jazmine's take over)
Our Day 5 started with having to say goodbye to the great hostel we had stayed at for the first 4 nights 😢. The building and scenery were wonderful, giving us views of the mountains, volcanoes, local flora, and North Quito. We did have some toilet issues the night before but that was completely on our (my) part. Did you know you can't flush toilet paper in Quito?
View from our hostel. This is one of the volcanos of Quito and it was beautiful! From there we returned to Reypin, the school for children with disabilities, for a day filled with fun, laughs, animals, new relationships, and new experiences. We board the bus with our buddies for the day and head to La Granja del Tio Mario. There we spend hours with the children learning to ride horses, milk cows, feed bunnies, and pet alpacas!
We had hot dogs for lunch and a dance party before heading to see the chickens and sheep!
After our fun-filled day with the children of Reypin and a hard goodbye, we ventured to one of the best-known attractions of Ecuador, the Equator of course! We learned of the history of the jungle trips and their traditions, saw some beautiful flora and dangerous fauna, a shrunken head, an original jungle village home, and visited a historic tomb from one of the ancient tribes.
A few of us got egg certified by balancing an egg on a nail at the Equator! A feat for the books and check on the resume’s 😂.
We then went to another section of the Equator where we bought llama sweaters, souvenirs, ice cream, our first actual cups of coffee since being in Ecuador ( peep Mika, E=H photographer, for coming in clutch with this information), and a spectacular view from the top of the tourist tower. The shops had various hand crafted and woven materials and you couldn’t beat the prices!
After a memorable time at Mitad Del Mundo (Center of the Earth) we headed back to Youth World headquarters (their office). There we had a deeper personal lesson on John 15 from Jorgito ( a G). We got to learn and reflect on how we currently do and would like to implement John 15 the best ways we can in our lives. This was really impactful and a good time to reflect with God!
I don't have any pictures of this so here is my egg certification certificate 😊.
Once leaving the Youth World office and taking with us what we learned about John 15, we made our way to the place we would be staying the last two days of our mission, El Refugio.
We sadly had to say bye to our main man on the road Paublo 😭. Paublo had made such an impact on us with his fierce driving, and humble attitude. We got to get a group picture with him before we departed and he said we were his favorite group he’s had! Such an honor!
El Refugio has a beautiful campus and wonderful retreat accommodations. You can truly see God’s artistic hand at work in the scenery with the mountains, water fixtures and llamas! There even was a full sized bed and guess who got to sleep there for the 2 nights. Yeah it was me haha.
We settled in and met some of the staff of El Refugio during an introduction meeting and then it was off to dinner.
We had an unforgettable dish that night since one of the main courses was GUINEA PIG! 🤮They even roast them like they do a pig which is so sad. Had me stressed. Simply put I was not having any of it and I think if El Hefa and Thomascitto could take back their pieces they would. But everyone else that ate the once adorable creature we call pets in the USA, seemed to like it and slept well at night so pop off I guess.
My eyes will never be able to unsee this 😞
I will never be able to unsee Callie eating her guinea pig leg with such joy and excitement. This is her serial killer trait. 🤢
If you thought the night was over, think again! After dinner and our moral compasses being compromised, we headed to the bonfire area of El Refugio to have an uplifting circle. This is where we would grab the giant talking stick and speak uplifting things over one another from the various aspects of the week so far. We also had s’mores!
John and Chevita (our guides) were not excused from this as they had made such an impact on our journey in Ecuador.
I had a great time speaking truth over my team and playing with the s'mores rod in the fire (I’m a bit of a pyromaniac).
After the uplifting circle a bunch of us stuck around and just talked for a while. Emi and Ned even jumped the fire!
After a day of jam packed excitement, we were bum tuckered out. We headed back to our rooms for some rest to prepare us for our last day in Ecuador. 🙁
God was in the midst of all of our adventures and his presence was felt and seen throughout our time in Ecuador. The relationships and memories we formed will be with us forever and is nothing short of God blessing us.
It has been great looking back at the pictures and remembering the wonderful time we had in Ecudor. Thanks for reading my post! Jazmine peaching out. ✌
Ecuador Day 4: Our day at Carmen Bajo (Lucy takes over)
Day 4 was filled with laughter, conversations, connections, painting, and just a little bit of dancing. One of the great joys of this trip was the way our team was invited into the lives and stories of the people we met. It felt like sacred space, and we were honored to be apart of it.
Day 4 started with a tour of Reypin, a preparation for the next day where we would take the students of Reypin to a farm (spoiler alert!). Reypin is a day program for kids and adults with disabilities. The staff at Reypin were warm and welcoming, offering us tea and a tour of their building. We learned of all the intentional ways Reypin has been designed to care well for their students, from spaces for students to work one-on-one with their speech or physical therapist to sensory rooms where students can play and learn motor skills.
After getting a tour of the facility, we walked to a nearby park, met the students of Reypin, and had a dance party. Please enjoy this video of our diverse takes on dancing...
We then drove back to the church of Carmen Bajo which was our home base for most of the week. We spent the rest of our morning playing with about 25 preschoolers at Carmen Bajo and helped lead a craft.
In the late afternoon we went to the Youth World office for a training on privilege. We loved that our service throughout the week was broken up by education and training. To be aware of our own biases and misconceptions is so necessary so that we can love, and come alongside, others well.
The night ended with a trip to El Manglar, a local restaurant that served huge portions of delicious Ecuadorian food. We were thrilled that our beloved bus driver, Pablo, joined us for the meal.
Ecuador Day 3: Worship and Fellowship with Carmen Bajo (Wyatt takes over)
Day 3 was a day that was full of worship, fellowship and sharing of powerful personal stories. This day reminded us that the Lord is truly at work all over the world. The kingdom of God is a global kingdom. It is a multifaceted kingdom full of diverse people reflecting the Lord’s beautiful image.
“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the lamb.” - Revelation 7:9
Ecuador Day 2: The One at the Park!
Welcome to Saturday’s blog post!! This is Callie reporting today from the WS Fellows!
We woke up on Saturday morning to the privilege of seeing a little tuft of smoke from the local active volcano! Apparently not very common to see – lucky timing!
Views of clear beautiful skies from our hostel!
Chivita continued to rock it on the aux! Beneficial for the extended van ride (featuring some navigation complications and traffic!) to the park where we met the Carmen Bajo youth community and leaders!
Some graffiti on a wall that we drove by that I really liked :) for our non-Spanish speaking friends out there, this means "God has the control/God is in control"
Carmen Bajo is a church in Quito that partners with Education Equals Hope, and we got to participate in a variety of activities with the church during our time in Ecuador.
Specifically on Saturday, we got to hang with the youth and helped facilitate games, passed out the delicious sandwiches and fruit provided by some wonderful women from the Carmen Bajo church community, and both Ned and Hef provided great talks for the older groups of youth!
Fruit is fortunately very affordable in Ecuador, and we enjoyed some refreshing papaya, pineapple, watermelon, and cantaloupe! I couldn’t participate (gluten free life) but I heard the croissant sandwiches were unparalleled.
I learned the common word for sunscreen in Ecuador, “el protector,” through a conversation with one of the girls; it was certainly needed for the couple of hours we were out in the heat! (Ned applying his sunscreen below!)
Likely my favorite part of this day was getting to sit in on the Bible study lesson provided for the younger kids by one of the Carmen Bajo staff. The discussion was on 1 John 4:18 and I was so encouraged and inspired by the eagerness of the kids to share their thoughts to the questions and how we got to practice memorizing the verse a couple of times as a group at the end. A nine-year-old girl prayed for the group to wrap us up – an inspiring picture of a beautiful and mature faith at such a young age.
Some of the fellows and I had a special bond with the flies at the park that day – some allergic reactions even resulted. As for me: 46 bites, swollen ankles, some steroid cream, and 2 weeks later and doing much better!
Grocery run afterwards – I convinced Lucy and Wyatt to try the “cedrón” (lemon verbena) tea – a favorite beverage for me the last time I got to go to Ecuador in high school. Wyatt has reported back that he really likes it, I’ll have to check in with Lucy regarding her ratings.
Afterwards, we walked to a Greek restaurant for dinner – I got lamb (“cordero”!), fries, a tomato and lettuce salad, and some delicious hummus! A number of us got the famous Ecuadorian juice, “jugo de mora” (blackberry juice), and this type of blackberry juice even featured some mint in it! So good!!
We had a debrief back at the Verbo Divino retreat center afterwards to discuss highs and lows of the day. A great time to reflect on the day.
The night finished off with Jazmine and I burning off a little extra energy (not sure how we had any left but there we were) with a little dance party in our room. We may or may not have gotten a knock through the walls – it was 10pm after all.
To finish off the post, we'll end with a game. If you zoom closer, you can play a little Where's Waldo and you might spot one of the Fellows taking a short nap on our bathroom break
Ecuador Day 1: Training and Introductions (Emi takes over)
We arrived in Quito, Ecuador at 1:00 am Friday morning. John and Chavita picked us up from the airport and took us to our hostel where we stayed for most of the trip.
After a couple hours of sleep we woke up the next morning to a wonderful breakfast. Every morning we had fresh croissants with freshly squeezed juice. After breakfast we did introductions and cross-cultural training at the hostel. The room we did the training in gave us this wonderful view of the active volcano Cotopaxi.
We were all very tired!
Next, we walked around Old Town and learned about the history of the city.

Celebration Time
It was a multi-year Fellows party on Saturday with Fellows from Year 2, 3, 4, and 5 all in attendance!
The Week
Round Table...we had a little Covid hiccup so Round Table moved to the Fellows House this week. We still were blessed with a Rainey enchilada casserole! Ned needed to slip out for a presentation but made it back in time to finish up a great study on Isaiah 53 led by Hef.
Leader Lunch...we had a BLAST with Betsy Annese who came to the Fellows House to share her amazing story of vocation and faith. I honestly would pay to hear this woman speak. Her stories are a hoot! THANK YOU BETSY!!!
Classes...we had two fabulous classes once again with the dynamic duo of Katy Benoit and Venneikia Samantha Williams. Then, it was off to lunch!
Festival of Lights
The Fellows joined a longstanding Winston-Salem tradition and waited in line with half the world to see the Festival of Lights at Tanglewood on Friday!
Half were in the cab - the other half were in the bed.
Celebrating Garrett and Caroline!
The highlight of the week was easily the wedding of Garrett Briggs and Caroline Wolfe. What a love story! Perhaps the coolest part of the story is that twenty-some years ago, when Caroline, who was born early and almost didn't survive, was only six months old, Paul Briggs, Garrett's dad, met her! And prayed for her! Little did he know he was praying for his future daughter-in-law!
We had a great cloud of witnesses to cheer these two friends along!
Congratulations Garrett and Caroline. We could not be more happy for you two!
Recruiting
We have extended two offers to Fellows for next year's class.
We have another interview in twenty minutes and are in discussions with a few more.
